Before the formation of Toto the members of the group did session work for Steely Dan,[3] Seals and Crofts,[4Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's singer.
About Toto
Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and the tour established them as a brand all over the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in over 31 years that all Toto's original members performed together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence for health reasons. Shem von Schröeck took over however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a string of lineup changes and a series of albums that were disappointing led Toto to end their tour for a period of time. But, the group recommenced touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return form for the band, and the tour accompanied by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
Toto's music remains as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s and getting new fans with every new generation. Their success has made them a permanent part of pop culture, and their live performances are always full of energy and excitement.
